English Homework 23.4.13

I could see him out in the crowd. He was getting agitated and I just hoped he found it in him to calm down, but by the shade of purple he was turning, it was pretty unlikely he would. Oh no he’s going to stand up I can see it in his face! “No!” he yells “your wrong!” I try to tell him to sit down but he cant see me, he’s too focused on the teacher. Oh. My. God. I think I’m about to die of embarrassment as he start to march through the crowd towards the stage. If I wasn’t dead from embarrassment I sure will be the moment he starts singing. Yep. I’m Dead. As he is singing though I realize the song he is singing and I calm down a bit. He finishes the song and marches over to the teacher and starts yelling. Its not a pleasant conversation to say the least. The teacher looks so surprised, before a look of embarrassment crosses his face, he won’t apologize though. Dad gives up and goes to sit back down. I’m up and when I look out into the crowd he gives me a thumbs up. How can I be mad at him, after all he is just trying to protect me and keep me safe.

Responding To Representations in Bran Nue Dae

1.      What qualities and values of people are privileged (presented positively)?
The Positive values that are presented are hope and love

2.      Which groups are marginalised or silenced? (presented negatively or not represented in the movie)
The groups that are marginalised or silenced are the Aborigines and the church

3.      What aspects of Aboriginality are presented in a positive way? What words/images are used to portray them this way?
The aspects that are presented positively are the love they give one another and their free spirits the way this is portrayed is the way willy and Rosie walk casually down the street together.

4.      What aspects of Aboriginality are presented in a negative way? What words or images are used to portray them this way
The way that they sit around and get drunk like Willies father did before Willy came and got him. The images of his father constantly drinking are used to portray this.

5.      How are European Australians represented in the movie? What words/images are used to portray them this way?
They are represented in a negative way because the preacher wasn’t a nice man and the son didn’t want to help Willy and his father.
6.      How is Broome represented in the movie? (note down words used to describe it and how images portray it as different from other places)
It is represented as a small local town in the middle of nothing. The images show long dirt roads and red sand and only a few cars travelling up the road.

7.      How is Perth represented in the movie? (note down words used to describe it and how images portray it as different from other places)
It is represented as a busy place but it is also represented as somewhere you wouldn’t want to be because broome is made to look so much better in terms of a happy community.

8.      How is Port Headland represented in the movie? (note down words used to describe it and how images portray it as different from other places)
Port Headland is represented in the movie as a negative place to be because that is where willy gets in trouble and the football team takes him to the wrong place

9.      Select two of the characters and explain, using direct evidence from the movie, what type of ‘Australian-ness’ they represent. (How do they and others view themselves as Australian? This might include things that you think make them stereotypically Australian)
The football coach – he was very helpful towards willy and told him to come and eat with the rest of the team and also offered to give him a lift. That is what Australians do, help their mates out.
Willy – he loved who he was and didn’t want to change it just because of what someone else said.

10.   Overall what representation of “Australian-ness” does Bran Nue Dae portray? (attitudes/beliefs/ideas make someone an Australian according to the movie)
Overall it represents that you should be yourself and help those who are in need. Believe what you want to and don’t let anyone tell you who you are supposed to be or you are supposed to become.

Rational

I would like to focus my article on Australian beach culture, because I think it is a good representation of Australia. I think beach culture is a good thing because it invites all ages, groups and races to become involved. It represents the easy-going, and laid-back lifestyle that most people think of when Australia comes to mind. I would like to use Noosa as my example of Australian beach culture because at any one time you have surfers, families, teens, elderly, lifeguards, fishermen and tourists all in the one area having a good time. I will use quotes from an elderly couple that have been coming to Noosa  for the last 30 years and now have semi-retired there. They will say how well it represents what they think it means to be Australian. Australian beach culture encourages a healthy, fit lifestyle that all should strive for, and I will include this in my article. I will use the positioning techniques Language Choice, Point of view, Imagery and Repetition to help form my article.

Homework Questions (The Surfer)

How does the author represent the Australian sea? Explain the words or phrases that

led you to this conclusion.
Bondi Rescue represents the Australian Sea as Something that can be fun however it can also be
extremely dangerous. The clips that made me form this opinion are the ones of the families
having a fun time swimming and building sandcastles, then the ones of people who have
drowned and are being resuscitated or have fallen and grazed their knees.

What type of person do you think this poem was written about?
I think this poem is written about a person who is probably a strong swimmer. The phrases ‘…
Muscle of arm thrust down long muscle of water…’, and ‘…How his brown strength…’ are what
lead me to this conclusion.

How is the representation in The Surfer either similar or different to those texts that we
have already discussed in class? Use at least one other test to compare/contrast.
The representation created in the surfer is very violent. The image created is almost as if the sea
is alive and it concentrates very much on the sea itself rather than the swimmer. This contrasts
to Clancy the overflow as the outback is made out to be a very peaceful happy place and the
representation concentrates more on Clancy himself rather than the outback as it is Clancy’s
actions that give us the representation of the outback and not just the description of the outback.
